We are thrilled to have so many passionate, enthusiastic, and experienced individuals who are committed to the success of the school. Please read on to learn more about the dedicated professionals and leaders who comprise our Board of Advisors.

Professional Advisory Board

Lexis Preparatory School has engaged the assistance and support of several key community professionals. Our Professional Advisory Board assists the development team and school leaders, and provides guidance on key issues. Advisory Board members are not compensated for their time and contributions. They are not responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school and are not asked to endorse any part of the program or the entire program. On behalf of the entire Lexis Prep community, we sincerely thank the Professional Advisory Board for their generous donation of time and knowledge.

Barbara Parry, Ph.D.
Psychologist

Dr. Parry graduated with a B.A from San Diego State University in 1978. After working in group homes and school districts for one year, she returned to graduate school at CSPP-Fresno. She graduated with her Ph.D. in 1984. She then went to work for Stockton State Hospital, providing psychological and behavioral services to profoundly developmentally delayed people who were being placed into the community. In 1986, she received her license as a Psychologist in California. She then went into private practice and has been in private practice ever since.

Dr. Parry was the only female Ph.D. in Stockton, CA, from 1986 until 1994. She and her husband moved to Las Vegas, NV, in 1994. She received her Nevada License in 1994 and has been primarily in private practice in Las Vegas since then. She has a general private practice and provides services to children aged 6-12 and their families as well as teenagers and adults who have depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and behavior management issues.

In 2002, Academic & Psychological Testing Services (APTS) was formed. This service provides assessment and tutoring for children and adults with learning problems. Dr. Parry has served as an examiner for the State of Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners since 2000. In July 2006, she was appointed to the State of Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners by Governor Kenny Guinn. She is currently Secretary-Treasurer and was President from 2008-2009.

Jeff Webb, MSEd.

Jeffrey obtained his B.A. from California Lutheran University in 1971. He taught tennis as he was taught education. He went on to gain his M.S. in Special Education from California Lutheran in 1976. He was a credential teacher in California from 1976-1982. He worked for Stockton State Hospital from 1976 until 1981, providing specialized educational services and applied behavior analysis services to mildly to profoundly developmentally delayed/mentally ill children and adults. In 1982, he and his colleagues began Central Valley Training Center (CVTC), a day school facility for developmentally delayed/mentally ill adults focusing on language development, community integration, and independent living. Jeffrey served as Chief Executive Officer for CVTC until 1994 when he and his wife moved to Las Vegas, NV. He ran a retail company from 1994 until 2003. In 2002, Academic & Psychological Testing Services (APTS) was formed, with Jeff as its Director. He provides psycho-educational testing and individual tutoring services to children and adults with reading and math disabilities.

Lewis Etcoff, Ph.D., ABN
Child and Adolescent Neuropsychologist

Dr. Etcoff, a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Nevada, received Board Certification from the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology in 1992 and was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the American College of Professional Neuropsychology. He is an Adjunct Professor of Neuropsychology at Touro University, Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is the supervising neuropsychologist in the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Etcoff is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at UNLV, where he has trained predoctoral clinical psychology practicum students over the past decade. Dr. Etcoff has an established private practice specializing in neuropsychological evaluations of children and adolescents who have learning disorders (reading, written expression, mathematics, language, and motor coordination), ADHD, brain injuries, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral, mood and anxiety disorders.

Michelle Carro, Ph.D.
Psychologist, Assistant Professor in Residence, Associate Director of Clinical Training

Dr. Michelle Carro earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Vermont in 1997. She has worked in the Las Vegas community as a practicing psychologist since 1999 and joined the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program as the Associate Director of Clinical Training in 2004. Dr. Carro has strong generalist clinical training and currently has particular interests in psychology practicum and internship competency development, psychodiagnostic and psychoeducational assessment, and clinical supervision. She oversees a psychological assessment training clinic where doctoral students under her supervision conduct comprehensive assessments of learning disabilities and ADHD. Finally, she is devoted to professional service. For the Nevada Psychological Association (NPA), she has served as the Public Education Coordinator, Legislative Committee Chair, Southern Region President, and Executive Board President for two terms. She is currently the Operating Board President for NPA's Pre-Doctoral Internship Training Consortium. She was honored by the association for "Outstanding Advocate for Psychology" in 2004 and 2008, and "Outstanding Psychologist" in 2009. She has also served the state psychology licensing board as an examiner and test-item developer.

School Development Team

Lexis Preparatory School is modeled after the highly successful Tampa Day School in Tampa, Florida (www.tampadayschool.com). While leadership for daily operations will occur locally, the school development team of Dr. Walt Karniski, Ms. Lois Delaney, and Mr. Jeff Poole will support start-up efforts and ensure a successful beginning for parents and students.

Todd Avis
Vice President of Education at American Education Group

Todd is an experienced educator and administrator with almost 25 years of experience in the field of education. He graduated with a BA in History/English in Secondary Education from Hillsdale College and also holds an MS in Education Administration from the State University College at Buffalo. Prior to joining AEG, Todd was Vice President for Education and Director of School Quality for National Heritage Academies. He directed an extensive education department including program development and implementation in curriculum, teacher development, federal and state grants, special education, and procurement. Before joining NHA, Todd was the Headmaster of Hillsdale Academy in Hillsdale, Michigan, the private academy under the auspices of Hillsdale College. While Headmaster of this national model school, Todd created curriculum, mentored college students, taught in the college education department and raised capital and endowment for building the permanent academy building.

Lois Delaney, M.A.
Head of School at Tampa Day School and Program and Curriculum Advisor at Lexis Preparatory

Lois has a Masters Degree in Special Education and has been actively involved in education for over 35 years. She has experience in private and public school settings (mainstream and special education), residential treatment centers, and a wide range of private practice and consulting positions. She has also taught Special Education courses at the university level. She provides local and national workshops to educators and parents on topics such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Behavior Management and Parenting. Lois has been at Tampa Day School since 1997.

Walt Karniski, M.D.
Executive Director at Tampa Day School and Lexis Preparatory School

Dr. Karniski is a board certified Developmental Pediatrician. He initially trained as a pediatrician at the University of Kansas and then as a research fellow with Dr. Mel Levine at the Children's Hospital in Boston where he was an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. He was the Director of Child Development at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and then Director of the Division of Child Development at the University of South Florida College of Medicine until 1993. He has published articles and research papers in developmental pediatrics. He has held numerous positions to advocate for children, including the Medical Director of the Child Protection Team, the Medical Director of the Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center, a member of the Florida Infant Hearing Impairment Advisory Council and the Florida Governor’s Autism Task Force. In 1997, he established the Florida Children’s Center, a multidisciplinary program for the evaluation and treatment of children with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Behavioral Disorders. For 15 years, he has been the Executive Director of Tampa Day School, a school for children with non-traditional learning styles. He and Lois Delaney own and operate the Bowman Academy, a preschool in Tampa, with his wife, Teresa Burgess, Head of School. With Lois Delaney, he started Keystone Preparatory School, for high school students with atypical learning styles. As Executive Director with the American Education Group, he took the educational model developed at Tampa Day School to open Lexis Preparatory School in Scottsdale, Arizona and he will continue to play critical roles in the development of future Lexis Preparatory Schools.

 

Jeff Poole
Senior Vice President at American Education Group

Jeff has extensive experience includes leading service companies with multi-location operations and ten years on senior management teams. Jeff has a BS degree in Food Systems Economics and Management and a MS degree in Agriculture Economics, both from Michigan State University. Jeff held senior management positions at National Heritage Academies (NHA), a charter school management company. As VP of Operations, he oversaw all fifty-one NHA schools in five states including school operations, facility management, and board relations. Jeff carries a passion for education and believes that all children are deserving of quality education.
